And it was. Bobby Hackney of Lambsbread dropped in for a chat. We talked about an upcoming show at Ira Allen Chapel, featuring D’Moja, Lambsbread and Channel Two Dub Band. We chatted a bit about the Burlington reggae scene and then went back to the music.
Music included: Steely & Cleavie, Daddy Lilly, Macka B, Junior Murvin, Peter Tosh, Culture, Bob Marley & the Wailers, African Head Charge (“What a wonderful day”), Sister Audrey, Prince Far-I, Bim Sherman, Dub Syndicate with Doctor Pablo, Sonja & Claudette, Mad Professor and a lot more.

1987-11-11 Judy Mowatt

One of the most inspirational voices in reggae music belongs to Judy Mowatt. A member of the I-Threes that back Bob Marley, she has had a wonderful solo career. This radio program is a tribute to that career.
Here is some background commentary from http://www.bostontheological.org/cool/judy-mowatt.htm
Although the music business has seen hundreds of gifted female artists, there has been, but a handful who compose their own music. JUDY MOWATT, who for years was a key member of BOB MARLEY'S 'I-THREES', is one of those rare women who control their artistic destiny. As a result, she has achieved an impressive chain of accomplishments. She became the first female singer nominated for a GRAMMY in the category of reggae music when her 'WORKING WONDERS' LP was nominated in 1985. She was the first female reggae artist to appear on LATE NIGHT WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, when she made her debut that same year. Her 'BLACK WOMAN' LP is considered by many critics to be the greatest reggae LP done by a female artiste. It was the first reggae LP recorded by a woman acting as her own producer. Her commitment to meaningful lyrics made her a renowned advocate of important issues concerning women, spiritual inspiration and African liberation. 'LOVE- IS OVERDUE' included on the SHANACHIE LP made her the first female reggae singer to score a major American pop hit. Magnificent voice, fertile composing talent and stunning beauty, JUDY MOWATT has all the ingredients necessary to take her trend - setting music even further into the international arena.

1987-10-28 Riding High in Scorpio

It was my birthday in 1987, a day when I am 37 years old. I did not seem to talk about it much, but just preferred to play the music. The title indicates that I am pretty happy with things at this time. I am a Scorpio, and here I am riding high in Scorpio. There are lots of my favorites here, though, and I guess I am having a little party for myself. Industrial Strength Dance #5 took place that night.
Music included: Arqa, Gladiators, Slim Smith, Joy Landis, Dennis Brown, Bob Marley & the Wailers, live from Reggae Sunsplash, Gregory Isaacs, Jacob Miller & Inner Circle, the Itals, Steel Pulse, Tony Victor, Massive Horns and much more.

1988-10-05 Rebel Souls

A nice fall day, and a chance to review the Rebel Souls performance from the previous Vermont Reggae Festival. Wow, I had forgotten how good they sounded! A little label problem here as the segment marked 2 is actually 1 and 1 is actually 2. I know we can figure it out.

1987-09-00 Bachelor Skank

Living that bachelor life and apparently loving it. A good song to start out with Aisha and “Hard luck bachelor.” Pounding System is playing downtown and so we heard some live music from them.
Music included: Judy Mowatt, Sandra Cross, Pounding System, live at the 1987 Vermont Reggae Festival, Capital Letters, Singers & Players, Chalice, Bim Sherman, Itals, Culture, Gussie Prento, Doctor Pablo & Dub Syndicate, Bob Marley & the Wailing and a lot more.

The frost came and the harvest began. Nice live intro by Yellowman, thanks to Jay Strauser for that. It started and became a real fall tradition as we salute nature’s bounty through music.
Music included: Rita Marley, Carlton Livingstone, John Holt, Capital Letters, Jacob Miller, Lambsbread, Rapper Robert & Jim Brown. Mighty Diamonds, Wellton Irie, Yellowman, Yellowman live at WRUV, Black Slate, Frankie Paul, Peter Tosh, Black Uhuru, Sugar Minott, First Light and a lot more.

1987-08-25 Ninety Minute Lunch

Most people get an hour for lunch if they are lucky. My reggae lunch is at least ninety minutes long, so you gotta love that! Lots of people out in the sun and listening to the radio, and I loved the way they called in and let me know. My best for Chris, who did overcome malaria, by the way.
Music included: Third World, Gussie Prento & Fashion Posse, Wackies Rhythm Force, Bim Sherman, Sophia George, Singers & Players, Tiger, General Trees, Philip Levi, Mad Professor, Channel Two Dub Band, Mutabaruka, Jacob Miller, Bob Marley & the Wailers and a lot more.

1987-07-29 Natty Cooler

We start out with a little Pounding System featuring Jah Roy Cunningham from the 1987 Reggae Fest. Nice memories, and he dedicates it to me (among others). How sweet can it be? Another nice Prince Far-I set and a dub set to conclude the program.
Music included: Pounding System with Jah Roy Cunningham, Sandra Cross & the Wild Bunch, Mighty Diamonds, Jacob Miller & Inner Circle, Prince Far-I, Jeff Cooper, Wackie’s Rhythm Force, Jah Shaka, Creation Rebel, Mad Professor, Channel Two Dub Band, Prince Jammy, Rubble Dub and Bob Marley & the Wailers.

1987-07-22 Jah's Birthday
23 July is the birthday of Haile Selassie. Well, this is 22 July, but we are going to go for it anyway. It was a great day to review the bands and artists from the just concluded 1987 Vermont Reggae Festival that had taken place at Oakledge Park and had been attended by
about 8000 people. All the bands are here except High Society. The rain started to come down during the Lambsbread set and because of the electrical situation the music had to stop. The problem was that the Meditations had not played yet. So, they played at Hunt’s that night and it was free. It worked out well.

1987-06-24 That's How It Is

Cleon Douglas (also known as Jus Cee) had given me a cassette tape of songs he had written and recorded recently, and they were awesome. I especially loved the song the show is titled after, “That’s how it is when you’re in love…” Incredible talent there, but I fully respect his desire to live a quiet life of introspection while avoiding what he called the dangers of the “spotlight.” Good for him, but a loss to those who did not get a chance to hear his music. Nice show follows with some interesting musical nuggets. There is a great promo for a Vermont Reggae Fest benefit done by Bobby hackney in a Barry Gee style.
Music included: Cleon Douglas (as Jus Cee), Mighty Diamonds, Sandra Cross and he Wild Bunch, Aisha & the Robotiks, Jerry Robinson, Bim Sherman, Wackie’s Rthythm Force, Half Pint, Judy Mowatt, Minky Moore & Lambsbread, Bob Marley & the Wailers and a lot more.

1987-06-03 Throw Me Corn
Larry Marshall had recorded a song called “Throw me corn” as a reggae classic, and I played it again this week along with some new releases and a number of re-releases of classic Reggae. “Corn” refers to money, so it has a special meaning. Also mourning the murder of Prince Far-I in Jamaica and using his own voice to let out that mournful cry. Sister Susan is on with her astrological forecast at the end, a regular feature in those days.
Music included: Prince Far-I, Studio One Dub Band, Augustus Pablo, Robotiks, Mad Professor, Sandra Cross, Larry Marshall, Macka B, Papa Levi, Ranking Tony, Lee Van Cliff, Ranking Toyan, Gregory Isaacs, Bim Sherman, Lambsbread, Bob Marley & the Wailers and a lot more.

1987-05-27 Vermont Posse

The Exposure album (Burlington bands) arrived in stores this day and I was all excited. I was also working to try and get people involved in organizing the Vermont Reggae Festival and coming to meetings. But, of course, I was also enjoying the music.
Music included: Sophia George, Sandra Cross, Studio One Dub Band, Chalice, Pato Banton, Wackie’s Rhythm Force, Jah Shaka, Willie Williams, Bim Sherman, Creation Rebel, Meditations, and a lot more.

1987-05-13 Jammying

A beautiful day outside and the music reflected it. I played some unfamiliar bands this day. A lot of interest in Burlington by various Reggae bands from around America, and the radio show tended to really focus them in on me. Some fun ticket giveaways as well. So many requests I could not play them all.
Music included: Bob Marley & the Wailers, Sophia George, Shelly Thunder, Tiger, Ken Rachlis, White Lion, Quasar, Gregory Isaacs, Burning Spear, Chalice, Chalawa and a lot more.

This show is a special dedication to everyone who is listening, everyone who is not listening, everyone who struggles, everyone who doesn’t have to struggle, to everyone I know and to all of those I do not know and perhaps never will. This one’s for you. All of you.
Music included: Arqa, Prince Far-I, Creation Rebel, Chalice, Singers and Players, Bob Marley & the Wailers, Jacob Miller & Inner Circle, Sandra Cross, Rita Marley, Mad Professor, Black Slate, Dub Syndicate, Augustus Pablo and a lot more.

1987-04-01 No Joke

Yes, it is April Fools Day, but this music is no joke. I save that for the second half of the show. Nice interview with Jeff Nichelson of the Committee for Vermont Reggae Festival about the upcoming show and challenges in organizing it. It was really exciting to play a section of the recent show by Reggae poet Mutabaruka, which was excellent.
Music included: Bob Marley & the Wailers, African Head Charge, Lee Perry, Half Pint, Chicken Chest, Gussie Prento & Reprobates, U-Roy, Mutabaruka live and more.

1987-01-27 March to Zion

Prince Far-I said it – March to Zion. Lots of interesting cuts here, and I especially liked the Ranking Ann song about the police. Lots of Mad Professor touches this week. Although only on the air for less than three years now, the program really does seem to have a following.
Music included: Jah Shaka, Ranking Ann, Rubble Dub, Steel Pulse, Macka B, Prince Far-I, African Head Charge, Eek-a-Mouse, Bim Sherman, Bob Marley, Gussie Prento, Mad Profssor, Don Carlos, Culture, Techniques, Mikey Dread, High Society, Singers and Players, Special AKA and a lot more.

1986-12-10 Headline News

The news isn't always in the headlines. Often you find it in the music. Especially Reggae music. This is a low key day full of variety and requests. Some of the songs may seem a bit cheesy, but people were requesting them. Music included: Robotiks, Dub Syndicate, Chalice, Prince Jammy, John Holt, Ken Rachlis, Laid Back, Bob Marley & the Wailers, Junior Tucker, Junior C. Reaction, Prince Buster, Specials, Toots and the Maytals, Sophia George and a lot more.

1986-11-26 Peace and Love
Just another reggae radio show with that utopian stuff, like peace and love. Some things never change. In any case, just because it is a cold day does not mean that we cannot have warm music. This is quite an interesting collection of Reggae music from the period.
Music included: Sophia George, Shelly Thunder, Ranking Ann, Pompidou, Junie Ranks, Derrick Irie & Face Girl, Lovindeer, Peter Metro, Papa Tolo, Beres Hammond, Half Pint, Dennis Brown, Bob Marley & the Wailers, Culture, Jah Cutta and Determination, Ashid of Afrikan Dreamland, Mighty Diamonds, Mad Professor, Channel Two Dub Band, Prince Jammy and a lot more.

1986-11-06 Legal We Legal

The show title comes from a single by King Kong with the same title, but this show has a lot more than that. We have a good strong segment from the Burning Spear show at Memorial Auditorium that had taken place in the previous week. I am not saying where the tape came from. Music included: Burning Spear, Mikey Dread, Frankie Paul, Mighty Diamonds, Eek-a-Mouse, Sophia George, Prince Far-I, King Kong, General Trees, Bob Marley & the Wailers, Special AKA, Lambsbread, Aswad, Augustus Pablo, Chalawa and more. There is a strange section in the middle where we obviously got some other stuff, so sorry for that, but it is over quickly.

This is just the first half of the show from that week. The other half may appear at some time and I will add it, but for now this is it. A big fundraiser for Vermont Reggae Fest coming up, and it features Burning Spear as the main act. It was an awesome show. Some tasteful Spear pieces here for your enjoyment. Some really nice redo versions of some songs on the Marcus Garvey album. Always an inspiration and a joy.

1986-10-15 Radio for Chris

Chris Purkiss had been a very important and conscious force on campus while he was here. His work on African famine relief and his spreading of Rasta philosophy were quite memorable. He left Burlington and went to work in the Peace Corps in Cameroon, then extended for another tour. But, he remained a fan of the program. He sent some taped greetings as well as some African reggae (did he really introduce us to Alpha Blondy? Apparently). I also played some stuff that I knew Chris would have enjoyed. I made a copy of the show and sent it to him so he could listen on the beach. We missed him.

1986-10-08 I and I Survive

A politically charged day, with South African divestment and other issues coming to a head. Just a moment listening to the news tells you what kind of time it was. Reagan. How could anyone have liked that guy? Music included some really rare Bob Marley & the Wailers ("Like a wounded lion in the jungle"), Bunny Rugs, Burning Spear, African Head Charge, Half Pint, Culture, Shelly Thunder, Sophia George, Massive Horns, King Tubby, Melodians, Jah Cutta & Determination and a lot more.

1986-10-01 Mix Up

Reggae music has a lot of different genres and styles, and this week I tried to explore a lot of them, and I especially used the help of my devoted listeners who called in with a bunch of requests. I always love that. Music included: Michigan & Smiley, Rita Marley, Macka B, Gladiators, Bob Marley & the Wailers, Dubby Brodie, African Head Charge, Aswad, Prince Far I, Culture, Prince Jammy, Black Uhuru, Viceroys and a lot more.

1986-09-24 Ganja Harvest Festival

This is the second such festival broadcast. I would wait until we had a first frost and the agriculturalists in the hills would call me and tell me, "It is time." Then, I would start planning the show and execute it on the next Wednesday. 90 minutes of music about ganja, marijuana, collie, weed, cannabis, or whatever you want to call it. Lots of fun and lots of response from the audience. This broadcast clearly did not represent WRUV-FM radio or the University of Vermont. It represents my desire to exercise my free speech rights in a protest over a law that I disagree with.

1986-09-10 Dub in Difficulty

I don't know about you, but often when I am in difficulty I turn to reggae dub music as a soothing and focusing tool. It gets me in a groove but gives me lots of room to think and plan. Thus is was on this week's edition of the Reggae Lunch. I am not sure what the difficulty was, but I was dealing with it with dub and things looked better by the end and we could do more than just dub. Music included: Sly & Robbie, Massive Horns, African Head Charge, High Society, Aswad, Chalice, Shirley McClain, Jah Malla, Dubbie Brody, Bassie, Studio One band, Freddie McGregor, Reprobates and a lot more.
